Movie Review: “Non-Stop”

What do you get when you mix Liam Neeson, threatening text messages and 150 million dollars worth of cash in a blender? You get the basic plotline to the movie – excuse me, thriller, arguably – “Non-Stop”.

At its core, “Non-Stop” revolves around a mystery that the U.S. federal air marshal, Bill Marks (played by Liam Neeson), attempts to solve while on board a non-stop flight from New York to London. More is revealed about Marks’ background as the story unfolds, but the premise of the film comes from the mysterious text messages an unidentified passenger sends Marks, leaving him no other choice but to find out who the passenger is. The mysterious passenger attempts to intimidate Marks by stating that someone on the plane will die every 20 minutes unless 150 million dollars is transferred to a particular bank account. Unable to discourage the passenger’s motives, Marks is forced to set an alarm on his watch for every 20 minutes in hopes of bringing the passenger to justice before time runs out.

Due to the nature of the investigation, Marks interrogates as many passengers as possible in order to identify the suspect. Along the way, Bill meets Jen Summers (played by Julianne Moore), Nancy Hoffman (played by Michelle Dockery), and Austin Reilly (played by Corey Stoll) just to name a few.

Watching the film for the first time is like playing a game of “Guess Who?” in your head. I’ll admit it was definitely fun to try deciphering all the subtle hints to pinpoint the “bad guy”. But where “Non-Stop” misses the mark is the way the movie finishes off. It wasn’t terrible. It was actually pretty good, but I guess with all the build-up and anticipation I expected something more.

Even though it felt like a thriller most of the way through, it ended off leaving me with something more to be desired. I’ll let you be the judge of that, though. “Non-Stop” receives a 3.5/5.
