Softball on a ‘roller coaster’ of season; hopes to regain focus

Freshman Avery Miller winds up for a pitch during a game against DeKalb on April 15. Central won the game 12-2.

Central’s softball team had a shaky start to their season with a record of 15-12. Despite winning three games against crosstown rival Naperville North, they have struggled to put together a consistent run of victories.

The team holds a record of 9-4 in conference play and hopes to regain some ground as the team moves into the final games of their season.

“I would say we’ve had a little bit of a roller coaster and honestly we aren’t playing as well as I would like to play,” head coach Andy Nussbaum said. “I think we have the potential to be better than what our record shows.”

The team recently has been working on its teamwork and focusing back on what is important to the team’s success.

“A lot of times it’s easy to not care that you lost because we have another game within 24 hours,” senior Abby Vorderer said. “We have had meetings during the week where we talked about focus and priorities for the team.”

The seniors on the team are always looking to improve and lead their fellow teammates.

“It feels different [to be a senior] on the team,” Vorderer said. “People are looking up to you and a huge part of it is leading through example.”

The team plays games most days of the week and has about a week left in the regular season.

“I’m hoping we can elevate our play,” Nussbaum said.
