Thor: Ragnarok trailer reinvents itself

On April 10, 2017, the trailer for the third and final film in the Thor series was released.

The day it was released, it skyrocketed to becoming the number one trending video on YouTube. It also garnered hundreds of thousands of likes. Down in the comments section, an overwhelming amount of users showered the minute-long trailer with praise.

It is worth noting how drastically different this new trailer is from its predecessors. Whereas the first two films´ trailers showcased glimpses of intense action scenes that quickly faded into black, this trailer was filled with light, complete with neon-esque block letters. The music used (Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, featured in the 2003 movie School of Rock) was also much more energizing and upbeat.

Perhaps this change in mood indicates that this movie will be different from the previous ones. And from the information that I’ve gathered so far, Ragnarok will introduce new characters, new settings and a new hairstyle for Chris Hemsworth. To the surprise (and dismay) of many Thor fans, Hemsworth has abandoned his classic golden locks for a more modern look. Personally, I miss his old hair, but I’m more than willing to give it a chance!

He didn’t just lose his hair, though. His faithful hammer, Mjolnir – one the most iconic symbols in the franchise – was shattered to pieces by Hela, the newly-introduced goddess of death who seeks to expand her sphere of control to Asgard. Rest in peace, Mjolnir. You will be missed.

Speaking of villains, some fans were a bit disappointed to see how little screen-time Loki had in the trailer. In one shot, we see him up close for a couple of seconds in his helmet, flipping two weapons (knives, perhaps?) in his hands. Behind him is a restless crowd, although it is unclear as to what purpose they serve.

Though it’s true that we don’t see much of Loki in the trailer, fear not – he still plays a key role in the film.

One highlight in the trailer (and an important scene in the movie as well) is the showdown between Thor and an armored Hulk. The trailer concludes with the two of them leaping towards each other, about to clash. This clip, along with the now iconic phrase, ¨He´s a friend from work!¨ has spurred many viewers to comment their speculations on the outcome of the fight.

This trailer looks very promising and personally, I believe that the directors made the right decision to turn away from the darker tone that embodied the previous two films. In doing so, they have attracted the attention of both Thor fans and critics alike.

Hopefully, the movie will not disappoint.
