Album review: “Pure Heroine” by Lorde

Referred to as an upcoming Lana Del Rey by some, 16-year-old Ella Yelich-O’Connor, more commonly known as Lorde, has taken the music industry by storm.

A New Zealand native, Lorde’s first album titled ”Pure Heroine” released on Sept. 27 and immediately made a splash in the iTunes top 100 charts. Although “Royals,” one of the first singles Lorde released off her EP, stood its ground at number two on the charts as of press release, it also became a top radio hit and was soon joined by “Glory and Gore,” and “Team.”

The unique background instrumentals and chilling vocals are what make a Lorde song inimitable. Additionally, Lorde sings of real life occasions, such as the lacking of royalty and fame, and being a regular teenager. The relatable topics prove to be successful in getting through to listeners of all ages. “Glory and Gore’s” moving beat and change of rhythm throughout the song keep the listener entranced, just as the rest of the songs on the album.

One of the most unique things about the young artist is her ability to use her eclectic style differently though every single one of her songs, making the album a mash-up of the same type of music with recognizably different tracks. “Buzzcut Season” is one of Lorde’s slower-paced songs, talking about “girls with heads inside a dream” and the reality of media prevalence in society today.

“Pure Heroine” proved to be a big hit among listeners, one of which is senior Erin Morris, who finds Lorde to be one of her favorite new artists.

“The album was a mix of all the artists I had already listened to, so I became a big fan,” Morris said.
