Film Review: The Imitation Game

Once again, Benedict Cumberbatch astonishes his viewers by his natural skill in transforming into a believable character.

In “The Imitation Game,” Cumberbatch plays a mathematician named Alan Turing. The film, set in World War II,  is based on a true story when Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II, were trying to crack the enigma code created by the Germans. It is also the biography of Alan Turing’s life before, during and after World War II. Other known supporting actors in the film consist of Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode.MV5BNDkwNTEyMzkzNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTAwNzk3MjE@._V1__SX1174_SY536_

“The Imitation Game” may sound like the perfect film for a math geek, and it is, but even the mathematically challenged can fully grasp the message of the film and understand each character. Besides needing to understand coding prior to the film, the director, Morton Tyldum, tries his best to explain the complicated information to the viewer.

In this dramatic film, war, homosexuality and life altering decisions are represented and are perfectly weaved together to create a beautiful work of art. I cannot tell you anymore without spoiling the film.

The cinematography, masterfully made, is by Oscar Faura. His expertise compliments the director, Tyldum, very well. They definitely saw eye-to-eye with each other and were able to film a suspenseful yet simple and beautiful film. The establishing shots and dolly movement fit perfectly with the film and made the actors look absolutely stunning.

Without the set decorations, “The Imitation Game” would not be able to accomplish its goal of making the viewers believe that what they are watching took place around the 1930’s and 1950’s. Even the outside scenes were beautiful, from the color, to the correct type of paper used in the past.

In the film, “The Imitation Game,” viewers are taken on a mostly nonfiction film to understand and learn about the social and political moves made by the allied countries to defeat the Nazi Germans. As well, people learn about Alan Turing’s brilliant mind and his struggle living with a secret that he cannot tell anyone.
