Currently at Naperville Central, sophomores and freshmen are not allowed to leave the campus during their lunch period while upperclassmen can.
One reason why might be that we may not be able to make it back to school on time in the minimum 42-minute periods. But many sophomores, including myself, have a driver’s license, which would allow us to get back to the building on time.
Juniors and seniors can get back on time with their cars, and some sophomores have cars too, so why can’t we get the privilege of off-campus lunch? I believe at least all sophomores with a license and car at the school should be allowed to have off-campus lunch. If a sophomore wants someone else to join them, then I think they should be allowed off-campus too.
Another possible reason behind us not having off-campus lunch is that many teachers believe that sophomores are less mature than upperclassmen, and would be more likely than upperclassmen to leave the campus and skip class. To address this, I think that sophomores should need to meet certain academic requirements to make them eligible to leave the building.
One requirement students should meet is having good grades. Students shouldn’t be allowed to leave with more than three D’s. So, only students who are actively engaging and focusing on their academics get the privilege to leave campus for lunch.
This ensures that off-campus lunch isn’t having a negative influence on student attendance or academic performance and good students are getting rewarded for their achievements.
I would love for the administration to take immediate action and grant off-campus lunch to sophomores this coming second semester because there are no reasons sophomores should not receive this privilege.
