The boys varsity soccer team has kicked off the season with a 4-1-3 record, with Naperville Central’s only loss being to crosstown team Naperville North on Sept. 7 in a 1-0 game.
Central began its season with a 1-1 draw against Elgin, followed by a 3-0 victory over Morton. In their third game, they also secured a 2-2 tie against Oswego.
“We have done a great job this year learning to play faster and connecting passes quicker,” head coach Troy Adams said. “We also have had success on free kicks and dead balls.”
The team has room for growth, especially in maintaining a constant work rate on defense and controlling possessions for longer, according to Adams.
Senior captains Mikey DeFalco and Aidan DiClemente have been standout players and leaders by example, according to Adams.
“I have been impressed with their commitment to doing things the right way, and helping new teammates get used to varsity soccer,” Adams said.
First-year varsity player Nolan Ewanic has also made an immediate impact on the team, scoring six goals in the first six games of the season.
Adams is in his 24th season coaching and 15th as the varsity coach.
“Seeing the players develop over the four years they are at Central is such a neat experience to be a part of,” Adams said. “Seeing the players make friendships and celebrate together is awesome to witness.”
Central’s goals are high for the remainder of the season. Two years ago, they won the IHSA 3A Boys Soccer State Championship. Last year, the team lost to North in the IHSA Sectional Final.
“Every year we have the same goals,” Adams said. “Win the DVC, win our sectional, and earn a state trophy.”
