Opinion: Top 5 Movie/TV Based Costumes for Halloween 2023

It seems like every year there’s a new movie or TV character everyone wants to be for Halloween. But with all the options it’s hard to choose which character/person to go as. So for this year, I decided to rank the top five best options for pop culture costumes in the hopes of inspiring some super cool costumes.

  1. Mario Characters

Mario characters have yet again piqued the attention of all generations due to the latest movie, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which could lead to some super cute family costumes. Not only does this franchise provide options for family costumes, but they also work for big groups or even individual costumes. With all the different eras and characters to choose from, the possibilities for a Mario-themed costume are endless.

  1. Barbie/Ken

One of the most popular couples costumes this year is going to be Barbie and Ken. Specifically, Western Barbie/Ken, a popular outfit shown in the new movie “Barbie,” but I don’t think I’ll get tired of it. Barbie and Ken are such fun characters to dress up as and these lovable costumes add some pink to this normally dark and scary holiday.

  1. Wednesday Addams

Wednesday is a Halloween costume classic. With the release of “Wednesday” on Netflix last year, though, many new fans are dying to dress up as her on Halloween this year. Personally, I really like this costume due to its simplicity. I have dressed as Wednesday twice in my life, once as a kid and once last year. All I needed was her signature dress — black with a white collar — braided hair, black lipstick and any black shoes I had. A superior costume on a budget that will be known and loved by all.

  1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Although this costume could be more complicated than others on my list, I absolutely adore this idea. The turtles—Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo—are all special in their own way, with different colors to represent themselves. The newest movie,  “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”, shows Raphael as red and aggressive while Donatello is purple and shy: You can pick a specific turtle to reflect your personality. I always enjoy seeing people with giant turtle shells on their back during Halloween, giving these costumes bonus points for amusement.

  1. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is undoubtedly one of the biggest pop stars of our generation. The box office response to her concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” only cements that. Everyone is going to the movie whether they have already gone to the concert or want to experience it for the first time. When showing up to the concert or movie fans wear lively themed costumes including different outfits based on each of her albums, which makes these costumes super unique. Most fans pick their favorite album, and dress like something having to do with the album. The possibilities add up quickly when you consider that Swift has released ten albums for fans to theme a costume on, not even to mention the hundreds of outfits Swift has worn at her concerts over the years.  There are just so many options for every fan, earning Swift as my number one Halloween costume for this year.
