Naperville Central’s boys tennis team nears their final matches of the year to close a prosperous season.

“We’ve had a really great year,” boys tennis coach Chris Harrison said. “We won first place at Bloomington and first place at the Moline tournament.”

The Redhawks took third place at the DVC tournament on May 14, behind Naperville North in first and Neuqua Valley in second.

“We won the most individual championships at the conference tournament, but lost to Naperville North in the dual match,” Harrison said. “We play in one of the most competitive conferences in the state and still had some very solid matches.”

Harrison says he’s not worried about their DVC ranking knowing they haven’t hit their peak yet.

We shine later in the season,” he said. “Last year, we didn’t win conference but we did better and placed at the state tournament.

The team’s dedication and chemistry have pushed them to work hard and achieve their goals throughout the season.

“We’ve worked extremely hard to play well and connect with each other, to get us where we are today,” senior all-state athlete and captain Blake Roegner said.

The boys head to their sectional meet on May 21 with big goals in mind.

“If sectionals go well I think our doubles have a chance of getting to state,” Roegner said. “Our singles should really be there too with how they’re looking.”

As the returning state champion, the pressure is high on Roegner going into sectionals.

“Blake has a chance at getting top three in the sectional, if he plays really well he could win the whole thing,”  Harrison said. “It puts a little extra pressure on him, but I know he has it in him.”
