Students organize contest to redesign Naperville flag

The Naperville flag may soon be receiving a facelift, if not a complete overhaul.

A group of students from Neuqua-Valley High School have created a contest to redesign the Naperville city flag, which they hope the city council will then approve. Sophomore Connor Tenny spearheaded the operation, recruiting fellow sophomores Andy Wang, Nathan Ashta, Haider Sawra, Jack Penrose and Ritvik Manda to run the campaign.

“We want a flag that flies proudly around the entire city and outside homes,” their website reads. “A flag that businesses proudly incorporate within their logos. A flag that the people of Naperville can rally behind. A flag that represents our values. A flag that is ours.”

Penrose explains the inspiration behind the contest.

“Connor Tenny, who’s the guy who started [the flag redesign contest], first got the idea when he watched a TED Talk by Roman Mars about flag design,” Penrose said. “He realized that our city flag had some major design flaws, so we started thinking about ways we could get a better one.”

Tenny was not the only one inspired by the TED Talk on flag design by Roman Mars. Across the city, Naperville Central senior Brian Crotty was already hatching ideas for a new Naperville flag.

“After I watched Roman Mars’ TED Talk, I realized that [the Naperville flag] broke basically all the rules of flag design and that it was absolute garbage,” Crotty said. “I had already come up with a few designs for a flag when I heard about the contest that the Neuqua kids were having. I’m still narrowing down which ones I want to submit, though.”

Although unofficial, the campaign for a new Naperville flag is garnering some attention from city officials.

“We had a meeting last Tuesday [where] we went to the city council and we proposed our ideas,” Penrose said. “They seemed really impressed, and even the mayor said he liked [our idea]. They still have to check some legal things, but we’re hopeful.”

For more information and to submit a design for the new flag, visit napervilleflag.org. Submissions are open until June 15, 2016. Voting opens in mid-July, and the winner of the contest will be revealed on Nov. 4, 2016 at the TEDxNaperville event.
