On Oct. 7, the varsity volleyball team played a game against Wheaton Warrenville South in honor of Matt Skowronski, who died suddenly on June 6, 2015, due to heart failure.

This game replaced the annual “Dig Pink” game with the title “Healing Hearts” in order to raise awareness about heart disease and failure. All proceeds from the game are going to a fund made to honor Skowronski.

Before the game began, there were short speeches given to honor Skowronski before the team ran out. Skowronski’s sisters joined the varsity volleyball players as the crowd, clad in red “#SKRONKSTRONG” shirts. All players, from both teams, stood on the court holding hands as they listened to speakers.

Volleyball Coach Jeff Danbom spoke on behalf of the community to honor Skowronski, speaking about his good qualities and why it was important to have this time dedicated to him. Skowronski’s parents, Kelly and Mike, spoke about Skowronski as well; they spoke about his character, and they thanked everyone at the game for their support.

“Matt was always looking down on people, and he is doing the same now,” Kelly said.

Mike stood behind her, his arms folded tightly over his chest. Kelly kissed two of her fingers, raising them to the sky as the crowd watched in silence.

An EKG tester was also present, who reiterated the importance of EKG screening and heart health. They said that anyone can get heart issues, even if they are healthy.

After this time spent honoring Skowronski, the game began. While it was close, Central won, 25-23 the first game and 25-22 the second game. The varsity volleyball team will play again at Naperville North on Oct. 15.
