Opinion: What dinosaur makes the best pet?

Kathryn Prerost, Correspondent

Dinosaurs are often perceived to be destructive, carnivorous, deadly creatures. But as a dinosaur enthusiast, I am here to tell you: those accusations are all correct. However, that shouldn’t restrict you from owning one of these little guys as a loyal companion.

There are a few things we should consider when deciding which dino-buddy to pick. With there being hundreds and thousands of species, how could I possibly choose? The most obvious thing to do is eliminate the possibility of any dinosaurs that would look to you for their next meal, meaning getting rid of all large carnivores.

To me, there are two clear answers. The stegosaurus and the velociraptor. As popular as they may be to society, they are both highly desirable for their own reasons.

Stegosauruses are one of the top dinosaurs to keep as a pet because of their friendly nature.

Stegosaurus were considered to be very tame, slow-moving creatures, who have a very low IQ due to their tiny brain. Basically what I’m trying to say is that they were very dumb. Their EQ can be compared to that of a modern-day golden retriever, so you can just think of them as a big, spiked dog. They were often found spending the majority of their time grazing in subtropical biomes and socializing with their other stego palls. Your stegosaurus will be very loyal to you and accept you as one of their own. They traveled in herds that included stegosauruses of all shapes and sizes, so who’s to say you couldn’t join their pack?

At the end of the day, Stegosauruses are for those who are more laid back and have a more relaxed lifestyle. Your stegosaurus will make for good company and will be very reliable. Just make sure you have enough space to keep them from breaking your furniture.

Although in the hit movie“Jurassic World” Velociraptors are portrayed as big, untamable, bloodthirsty animals, when in reality, they are actually small and energetic making them a very strong choice. Due to their high energy, you need to keep your velociraptor well-exercised so they continue their healthy lifestyle.; So feel free to snuggle up to your dinosaur, take them on walks around the park, or long drives in the car with the windows down. Your velociraptor will keep you busy and on your toes. I promise there will never be a dull moment with one of these little guys.  Just make sure to keep it well-fed to avoid any potential accidents…

Even though Velociraptors are carnivores, considering most didn’t grow past two feet in height, they don’t really pose a major threat. When looking for a pet, I’d prefer one who wouldn’t knock over all of my decors when doing something as simple as turning around, so to me, velociraptors take up a perfectly reasonable amount of space around your home.. Their optimal size is similar to that of a small dog, so you can easily care for them while not having to worry if they’re going to fit through the hallway or not. They aren’t demanding when it comes to square feet, so they could easily fit into your living quarters, no matter the size!

With all being said and done, there are so many different kinds of species of dinos out there. I’m not one to tell you which one would be a good fit for you, but I can confidently give you my top two. But before heading down to your local pet store to adopt one of these creatures, make sure to do your fair share of research to make sure you can properly tend to the needs and wants of your prehistoric pal!
