Girls Varsity Volleyball season recap

The girls varsity volleyball team ended their 2019 season after losing to Benet in the sectional semifinal game on Nov. 4.

The team had a rough first set against Benet, losing 25-12. They fought hard in the second set, but ultimately lost 25-17, which ended the season.

“Benet is just a good team,” varsity assistant coach Todd Holmberg said. “I think the girls were ready, I think they were prepared, and it was just unfortunate that we didn’t move on.”

Central grabbed the lead in the first set but Benet managed to catch up and surpass them. The second set was successful. Both teams traded blows until the score was 15 all. Then Benet pulled ahead and ended Centrals’ hope to play for a sectional title.

Having been 10 years since the team made it to sectionals, the team was pumped to advance in playoffs. The team beat Neuqua Valley High School in the regional finals.

We all believed in what we could do as a team and knew that we just had to play our best,” senior setter Grace Butler said. “We had beaten [Neuqua] once and they had beaten us once so it was going to be a close game.”

Holmberg credited the success to teamwork and a strong bond between the girls.

“[Volleyball] allows you to build a stronger community in the school and build friendships because you’re basically always with them, including weekends and every day after school,” middle hitter Kenzie Brower said. “At the games, the friendships helped us play as a team and not individually.”

With eight varsity players being seniors, the seniors are excited to leave a lasting legacy for the mostly new roster next season.

My advice to girls who want to try out is to work hard and go to summer camp. It’s a good way to develop your skills in a low-stress environment,” senior setter Grace Butler said. “[Volleyball] is like a family and you get so close to all your teammates and coaches.”
