Downtown Naperville traffic came to a halt on Sunday, Oct. 25, when YouTube sensation Tyler Oakley arrived at Anderson’s Bookshop at 123 W. Jefferson Ave. to promote his new book, “Binge.” Oakley is currently on the U.S. leg of his 13-stop tour, 11 of which are sold out.

There were firm restrictions placed on the attendees by the bookshop. The event was photo-line only and small groups of people were ushered in by ticket number. In order to receive one of these limited tickets, guests had to purchase a copy of “Binge” online and were not allowed to bring personal cameras into the line—the photos were taken professionally at the event. Anderson’s maintained their strict regulation reputation—even press was required to have a pre-approved slip.

“Binge” is a collection of personal, comedic and emotional essays that showcase the personality that made Oakley famous to begin with. In terms of content, Oakley, in his YouTube announcement (“I’m Ready to Tell the Truth | Tyler Oakley”), states that “even if you have watched every single one of [his] videos, you don’t know any of it.”

Oakley began posting videos on YouTube in 2007 and has since become one of the website’s most successful stars. He is adored by loyal fans worldwide with over 7.5 million YouTube subscribers. As an avid supporter of LGBTQ rights and a social issues activist, Oakley has captured the attention of countless liberal youths.  Karissa and Justen Jones are two students that visited Oakley’s “Binge” event this past Sunday.

“[Tyler is] down to earth, he’s funny,” Karissa said. “We love watching him and listening to his podcasts when we go on long car rides, that’s always fun. He’s very relatable.”

In case you didn’t make it to Anderson’s, Oakley posted an Instagram photo captioned, “My interests include finding my book in Target and Barnes & Noble and other book stores and signing every copy” while still in Naperville. Keep an eye out!
