New staff member Tabitha Kahl shares her background with the Central Times

Kylie Brown, Entertainment Editor

Q: What department do you work in and what do you teach?

A: I’m in the Special Education Department, and I teach English 2. I co-teach with Rachel Brodeur, and then I have another English 2 class and some light workshops. I’m basically mostly in English.

Q: Where are you from? What is your educational background?

A: I recently moved from Cleveland, Ohio. This is my seventh year of teaching. My background was five years in a middle school setting and then two years in a high school setting.

Q: What was your previous job specifically?

A: I worked five years at a place called Hudson Middle School, and then I worked one year in the Plainfield City School District, so Plainfield High School.

Q: What are your hobbies, or interests outside of teaching and work?

A: I run and have ran four half marathons. I play basketball in a Women’s League on Tuesday evenings. I really enjoy reading and I have a 7-year-old son, so I spend a lot of time with him outside of school as well as with my husband.

Q: Why did you become a teacher?

A: Well, I became a special education teacher because I really wanted to help students learn in a different way, and I love the fact that when I co-teach, I can have two teachers to help me with the students, whether that’s a struggling student or a student that needs extension.

Q: What is a philosophy you hold about teaching, or what can students expect from you?

A: I think my educational philosophy is that every student can learn. It may take them a little bit more time, but I’m truly there for them. Students can expect that they can come to me even if it’s not anything related to school. They can meet me outside of school. I really want to get to know them as an individual too.
