Given it’s cheesy title, I was not overly surprised when I walked out of “Endless Love” remembering only Alex Pettyfer’s good looks and a few songs from the movie’s soundtrack.
The film was directed and co-written by Shana Feste (“Country Strong”), is a remake of Franco Zeffirelli’s 1981 film, and is based off Scott Spencer’s novel. I haven’t seen the original film or read the novel but I can’t imagine either being worse than Feste’s rendition, which is unsurprisingly bad (after all, she directed “Country Strong”).
From the beginning of the movie, the story is incredibly cliché. A not-so-popular boy named David (Alex Pettyfer) falls in love with rich girl named Jade (Gabriella Wilde) in high school, despite having never talked to her. Then, graduation rolls around and the two immediately “click” and fall in love. The only thing stopping their young love is Jade’s disapproving father (Bruce Greenwood), but their love prevails—after all, it is “endless.”
Along with being cliché, the movie moves unrealistically fast and Jade’s personality takes a 180-degree turn after about 10 minutes. In the opening scene of the movie, Jade is closed-off at school and keeps to herself due to the recent death of her older brother. However, within five minutes of meeting David and only about 15 minutes into the movie, she is all smiles, outgoing and in love. Why the change in personality, you ask? Who knows.
On the bright side, for all the alternative and indie rock fans out there, the soundtrack features songs from Tegan and Sara, NONONO and The Tallest Man on Earth, among others.
Overall, I thought the actors did as best as they could with the script they were given which, unfortunately, was a rather terrible one. If you really want to watch the movie, I’d suggest saving your money and waiting until the movie comes to Redbox to watch it.
