Mike Palmer: Bears week 16 column

When I was making my Christmas list this year, I noticed that the Bears played the Packers on Christmas Day. The number one thing on my list was for a Bears win. I also didn’t know at the time that the team’s starting quarterback and running back would be injured.

Where has Josh McCown been the last few weeks? The Bears easily would have been in the playoffs with how poor their schedule was with him leading the team. In his first game since 2008, McCown threw for 242 yards and a touchdown. Don’t mind the two interceptions he threw, he was a good game manager for most of the game and finally helped the Bears score some points. But you are never safe when you are facing Aaron Rodgers.

The defense was once again terrible for two straight games. Zach Bowman got torched in the secondary, and Brian Urlacher seemed to be the only one interested in playing football. Granted, they are also facing a Super Bowl MVP in Rodgers and a stellar offense that had not been slowed down since last week at Kansas City. Rodgers finished with five touchdown passes and 283 yards through the air. That is inexcusable for any team. The pass rush was practically non-existent with only one sack. Give any quarterback that much time in the pocket and he will pick you apart. When the Bears finally put points up on the board, the defense failed to answer the call, and it killed the team.

We knew the season was over after last week’s loss. Beating the Packers could have made any Bears fan feel a little bit better, but at least it improves the teams draft stock. I will continue to stress that the team needs a big play wide receiver, and going through the draft is an excellent way to find one.

So as it turns out, Santa was not able to come through with my Christmas wish. I just hope the Bears don’t fall on his naughty list next year too.
