Bears week 15 column

Watching this game, I literally pulled out a piece of my hair. On the other hand my nails are intact because by no means was it a nail biter.

There were many factors as to why the Bears got dealt their seventh loss and likely are out of playoff contention. Caleb Hanie stayed atrocious, which was no surprise. But the defense was also terrible, giving up thirty-one points (the other seven points came off of a Hanie interception).

The offense was never able to get going despite Hanie’s only touchdown pass to Kahlil Bell. The Bears will never be able to win when their offense only scores seven points a game. It is virtually impossible to win that way. Any team in the NFL is too good to lose seven to nothing. The Bears will not win any of their last two games if they keep showing up on offense like they did today.

On the defensive side of the ball, there were some bright spots. The key word is some. After Julius Peppers stripped Tarvaris Jackson in the end zone and the fumble was recovered for a touchdown, everything collapsed. A combination of missed tackles and assignments decimated the Bears defense all game. During the second half, they let Jackson carve them up, as he finished with 227 yards passing and one touchdown. Having a below average quarterback man handle you is inexcusable. When we thought that the defense was the only bright spot left on the team, they left fans disappointed and dumfounded.

The special teams have also been missing in action since Jay Cutler’s absence. Devin Hester doesn’t seem to be reading punts as well, and giving up a long punt return to an average special teams unit was horrendous.

The season may be over, but at least Bears fans can look forward to the draft. The team needs a big play wide receiver. Signing washed up veterans will not cut it anymore. It needs to be done during the draft. Michael Floyd anybody? As much as this loss was a disappointment to the members of the Bears ball blub, I’m sure that this loss is the last thing on ex-Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd’s mind. Although he may get a little laugh out of the collapse sitting in his jail cell in North Texas.
