Programming beast

Prior to the start of this school year, approximately 800 Central students flocked to senior Parker Duwelius’ website, schedulebeast.com. It allows students to input their schedules and find out who else is in their classes before the semester begins.

Duwelius has been avidly pursuing programming as a hobby since he was seven years old. His favorite thing about it is its limitless possibilities.

“You can’t finish programming” Duwelius said. “It’s always renewing itself and it’s always becoming more exciting, especially in this day and age.”

Although Duwelius does not consider himself an avid video game player, his interest has grown a lot due to video games.

“I like to modify things and make them exactly how I want them” Duwelius said. “Programming has allowed me to do that.”

However, Duwelius doesn’t just use programming to modify the video games he likes to play. He has incorporated programming into his other interests, such as Volleyball, creating an app that keeps track of his statistics.

Duwelius has also created programs to help make the lives of wide audiences easier, such as Schedule Beast and a number of graphing calculator programs with which he has started a small business.

“I’m into making software that’s really useful” Duwelius said. “If I can’t find something in the Apple app store or the Google play store and I can’t find a way to do it online, I’ll just make a way to do it.”

Despite his long interest in programming, Duwelius does not wish to pursue it as a major in college or as a future career.

“It’s more of something that I want to do in my free time” Duwelius said. “I might develop apps or something as a hobby, but I don’t want to be a professional.”
