Winter Spirits host Midwest competition

Erik Wang

Starting off their winter season, the Spirits hosted their first Winter Guard competition at Central Jan. 24. The competition featured 27 teams from their division, the Midwest Color Guard Circuit.

“It’s a big deal,” said junior captain Amber Stevenson, “and it’s at our school so all our family and friends are going to be there, so it’s a good supporter for everyone to come and see us.”

Stevenson describes the guard’s routine as something of a “military show. It has some Christina Aguilera songs in it, and it’s [kind of] jazzy.”

While the Spirits generally perform with the marching band during the fall, they perform their routines alone in the winter and competition is more intense.

“Winter Guard is a lot harder than Fall Guard, and it’s more elite,” said junior Nina Larson, who performed with the Spirits last year. “The tryouts are really hard, and they cut down a lot of the girls.”

Larson said hosting a competition takes a lot of work.

“You need people to bring the guard places, people to set up, people to take down, people to sell tickets [and] people to get the judges what they need,” she said.

Stevenson agrees, adding that around 100 parent volunteers are required to run the event.

Along with Stevenson, the other captains this season are junior Kaylee Stubitz and senior Meredith Gross. Math teacher Amber Cotrano supervises and Lorenzo Medrano coaches the team.
