Scholastic Bowl has improved season

Meghna Rao

The Scholastic Bowl, an academic club that competes against other schools, is an IHSA activity. A team of students travels to different schools to compete, where they face off in a Jeopardy-type match.

Currently, there are about 25 students who participate, and it is one of the larger amounts they’ve had, varsity coach Hans Muehsler said.

“The students have been doing very well this year,” Muehsler said. “We have a couple of outstanding players this year who are really helping out. They are young, so we will have them for a couple more years.”

There are many different topics that the questions can come from, such as science, math, history, English, literature, sports, art and pop culture. Two teams compete against each other in a room.

Each match consists of 16-30 questions either in the form of a toss-up or a bonus.

The entire team can collaborate on the bonus, but they must answer the questions in 30 seconds. Any questions that the team misses, the opposing team can try to answer.

“Competition is very tough,” Muehsler said. “The DVC conference is generally recognized to be the toughest in the state because we have three to four schools that are evenly matched and are usually state contenders.”

Muehsler said this year the team is doing better because they place first through fourth as opposed to last year.
