Cubs win World Series, send shocks through Central

Chicago Cubs superfan Bill Murray drunkenly singing “Take me Out to the Ball Game” wasn’t the only highlight for Chicago this past month. The 108-year “curse” was broken as the Cubs won their first World Series since 1908.

The Cubs won over 100 games in the National League this past year as well as beating the San Francisco Giants in the Division Series, then beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) and finally beating the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series on Nov. 2.

At Central,  Cubs spirit was avidly apparent from the constant playing of “Go Cubs Go” by Steve Goodman in the hallway to people wearing their Bryant, Rizzo and Arietta jerseys every day.

“I was 8 when I went to my first Cubs game,” said Jim Galanis, a social studies teacher at Central. “I would follow them on Channel 9, listen to the games on transistor radio.”

While some have always been Cubs fans, many Chicago White Sox fans have noticed a depletion in their fan base.

“If they are going to be posers, they are going to be posers, though I can’t judge them since I don’t know them,” Senior sox fan Mitchell Hale said.

Rather than pretending to be a Cubs fan, Hale remains loyal to his team while supporting the Cubs.

With the location of Wrigley field close to Central, many staff and students had the opportunity to attend games during the Cubs’ postseaon run. Galanis, for instance, saw the Cubs face the Dodgers during the NCLS.

“We sat in the bleachers,” Galanis said. “The atmosphere was electric… almost unbelievable.”

After the win, Chicago held a rally and parade with over five million people in attendence, 500 of which were Central students.

“It was really great to be a part of one of the largest human gatherings ever,” Nick Martinez, who attended the rally on Nov. 4, said. “I got to celebrate something not just with my friends, but with the whole city of Chicago.”
