The period immediately after the summer movie season ends is generally when Hollywood goes to sleepnot many movies are released and the movies that are released are generally not very good. That being said, this October looks to be full of interesting movies, both large and small.

“Crimson Peak” (in theaters Oct. 16): Director Guillermo del Toro directs his first feature film since 2013’s “Pacific Rim” with this haunted-MV5BNTY2OTI5MjAyOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTkzMjQ0NDE@._V1_SX640_SY720_
house story. Mia Wasikowska stars as a woman who marries a wealthy and seclusive man (Tom Hiddleston) and moves into his estate with his sister (Jessica Chastain), only to realize that the house and her husband hold terrible secrets. Advance word has been kept under wraps, but writer Stephen King did praise the film as “gorgeous and…terrifying.”

“Bridge of Spies” (in theaters Oct. 16): Steven Spielberg’s first film since “Lincoln” in 2012, and his first collaboration with Tom Hanks since “The Terminal in 2004, Bridge of Spies” takes a look at the tense negotiations that fueled the Cold War in the 1950s. Hanks plays an insurance lawyer who agrees to defend a Soviet spy, only to bear witness as the Soviet Union asks to trade the spy for a captured American pilot.

“Room” (in limited release Oct. 16): The winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, this adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name stars rising star Brie Larson as a mother who is held prisoner in a garden shed with her son. The son believes that “Room” is the entirety of the world until his mother decides that they need to escape.

“Steve Jobs” (in theaters Oct. 23): This film, the second in two years about the life of Apple founder Steve Jobs, went through numerous directors, actors, and studios before being helmed by “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle. Michael Fassbender plays Jobs, with Seth Rogen, Kate Winslet, and Jeff Daniels playing some of Jobs’ partners and adversaries. The story, which is told in three different Apple product launches, was written by “The Social Network’s” writer Aaron Sorkin. The film received rave reviews when it played at the New York Film Festival.
