Redhawks of the Week: Junior Meghan Horton

Meghan Horton
As a member of the Varsity Arrowettes team and a volunteer at Teen Parent Connection, Meghan Horton is a passionate fan of all things British, especially Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes and The 1975.

1. What are your post high school plans?

I’d really like to teach preschoolers or elementary school kids, so I’ll probably major in Early Childhood Education at Eastern Illinois University. I want to minor French and study abroad in Paris and Dublin as well.

2. How do you fit into the NCHS community? What activities are you involved in and what do you contribute inside and outside of the classroom?

I’m pretty shy in most of my classes, so I’m not so sure about inside the classroom. I am on the Varsity Arrowettes team though, and I take dance classes at a studio. I also volunteer at an organization called Teen Parent Connection, where I take care of kids while their parents are in support group.

3. What are you most proud of?

I’m probably the most proud of how my family and I helped my sister raise her kids. My nephews turned out pretty fantastic.

4. What is your life dream?

As of now, my life dream is to own a snazzy sailboat and teach my future kids how to sail.

5. What is something about you that you would like other Redhawks to know about you?

Hmm… If you’re into British things like Sherlock, Harry Potter and The 1975, I’ll probably want to be your best friend.

6. Favorite high school memory?

A few days after my 16th birthday, my dad took me to a White Sox game against the Texas Rangers to see my favorite player, AJ Pierzynski, the first season after he had been traded from the Sox.

7. Favorite joke or quote

“Of course it’s happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” –Albus Dumbledore in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”

8. What is something you can’t live without?

I definitely couldn’t live without my twin nephews. I’ve lived with them for the four years they’ve been around, and it’ll be really hard adjusting to college life in a few years without them bouncing off the walls of my dorm room. Even when they’re away visiting family for just a week, it feels like they’re gone for months.

9. What are three adjectives you would use to describe yourself?

I like to think that I’m loyal and trustworthy, and I know for a fact that I’m really nerdy.

10. If your life were a movie, what would be the title?

Fangirl

11. Who is your biggest hero or role model?

My biggest role models are my two older sisters. They’ve both been through so much but never let other people’s unwanted opinions influence their major decisions. My sisters are both very independent and outspoken, which are some things I’m working on being.

12. What is a motto you live your life by?

“The world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters, Harry.”

This kind of explains the complexity of the people you’re going to encounter in your life. They’re not going to be wearing name tags that say, “Hello, I’m a bad person,” because humans aren’t that simple. People might have a characteristic that you don’t like, but you can’t generalize their entire life based on that one sliver of their personality.
