Song review: “Sing” by Ed Sheeran

Due to the worldwide success of his first album “+,” Ed Sheeran has a lot expected from him in his second album. The album, titled “x,” is set to be released in June, but its lead single “Sing” was released April 7.

The single was produced by the ever-so-popular Pharrell Williams and closely resembles Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You.” Different from Sheeran’s “+” hits “The A-Team” and “Give Me Love,” “Sing” features many never-heard-before falsettos from Sheeran, as well as rapid-fire rapping (similar to that heard on Sheeran’s “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You”) accompanied by old-school beats and Sheeran’s usual acoustic guitar.

Although it’s a nice change from Sheeran’s usual slow ballads, “Sing” isn’t my favorite song of his. Personally, I prefer the loop pedal acoustics of “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” to Williams’ beats in “Sing” because they complement Sheeran’s voice better. That being said, I still enjoy listening to “Sing” and it’s a catchy song to say the least.

If “Sing” is any indicator of what “x” is going to be like, it’s safe to say that the album will feature new sounds and possibly some unexpected collaborations. Although the Sheeran-Williams match-up wasn’t my favorite, I’m excited to hear what Sheeran has in store this summer.
